This October we continue our new Reading Series with authors Yiming Ma and Whitney French in New Approaches to Literary Science Fiction! Join us for an evening of author readings and an in-depth panel followed by a Q&A session and open mic sign-up.

Please note that this event will be taking place in the Creative Campus Gallery (room B234) in the B-Wing at Sheridan College's Hazel McCallion Campus.

Born in Shanghai, Yiming Ma spent a decade in tech and education before writing the dystopian novel These Memories Do Not Belong to Us, which was named a Spotify Editors' Pick, longlisted for the Goodreads Choice Award, and featured on Best Book of 2025 lists by Electric Literature, Debutiful, PEN America and elsewhere. It was a finalist for the 2026 Rakuten Kobo Prize in Speculative Fiction.

Yiming attended Stanford for his MBA, and Warren Wilson for his MFA. His stories and essays appear in the New York Times, The Guardian, The Globe and Mail, Florida Review, and elsewhere. His story “Swimmer of Yangtze” won the 2018 Guardian 4th Estate Story Prize. He lives in Toronto with his daughter, wife and beloved two cats.

 Whitney French (she/her) is a writer, educator and publisher. She is the editor of the award-winning anthology Black Writers Matter (University of Regina, 2019) and Griot: Six Writers Sojourn into the Dark (Penguin Random House Canada, 2022). Her novel-in-verse, Syncopation was recently published by Wolsak and Wynn. Whitney French is also the co-founder and publisher of Harbour Press, the only Black, queer, feminist press in Canada. Currently she is an Assistant Professor teaching creative writing at the University of British Colombia. She lives in Vancouver with her toddler and two cats.
